800th anniversary of Tracton Abbey
Sisters Fiachra and Kathleen were delighted to be amongst a group of Cistercians invited to participate in a wonderful Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Minane Bridge recently, to celebrate the 800th year of foundation of Tracton Abbey by monks of the Cistercian Order. Bishop Fintan Gavin was the chief celebrant, assisted by Fr Denis Luke OCSO, the retired Parish Priest Canon George Murphy and several local clergy. Bishop Emeritus John Buckley also attended. The Parish Council had spent many months preparing and organizing the huge event which involved a great cross section of people including those responsible for liturgy, singing, flower arranging, catering, grounds maintenance etc. Local school children provided a guard of honour and also participated in the offertory procession. The three Cistercian novices together with Fr Denis Luke and the Sisters sang the Salve Regina as a Communion reflection. Following the Mass there was a delightful reception in the adjoining marquee where Bishop Fintan and Fr Denis Luke cut the cake and addressed the crowd. Prior to their departure for home, a beautiful book on the history of Tracton Abbey was presented to the sisters by the Chairman and Secretary of the Parish Council.
