For the past nine weeks, our Church has undergone a beautiful transformation as it received a fresh coat of paint. This renewal project brought both challenges and blessings for the community, as the usual rhythm of monastic life adapted to this temporary change.
During this time, the community gathered in the Chapter Room for the Divine Office, sometimes welcoming guests into this (much smaller!) space. It was different, and in many ways, not quite the same as the familiar setting of the church. Without the usual reverberation of prayerful voices rising in the sacred space of the abbey Church, the experience felt more humble. Yet, even though it was less than ideal, the Divine Office continued with faithfulness, sincerity and devotion.
This experience reminded us that the beauty of our faith lies not just in our surroundings but in the spirit with which we pray and work. The temporary setting may have felt less profound, but it brought the community together, deepening our appreciation for the usual sanctuary we hold dear.
The familiar walls, now refreshed, invite us back into a space that feels, in the words of St Augustine, ever ancient and so new! The renewed beauty of our church reminds us of the enduring splendour of our faith—rooted in tradition yet constantly renewed by our devotion. We look forward to gathering once again in this beloved space, letting our prayers rise within these walls, echoing the faithfulness of past and present generations.
“Beauty ever ancient, ever new.” Do come and see!
